Development in this area is rapid, so this is far from a complete list. There are a few links to items I have written.<\/p>\n<p>Development &#8211; These tools allow you to write, edit, and publish modules that are in commonly used file formats such as .swf (a Flash movie).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.geofboyle.net\/player.html\">Articulate<\/a>, a powerpoint add on, based around slides, with options for quizzes and spacial organization of information (flowcharts, etc)<\/li>\n<li>Camtasia, another powerpoint add on, but video rather than slides<\/li>\n<li>Captivate, more robust, but essentially more of the same from Adobe<\/li>\n<li>Flash, by far the most versatile, but requires a more extensive set of skills to wield effectively.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>Content Management System &#8211; \u00a0Tools to organize collections of content so that users can navigate to what they want.<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>WordPress &#8211; easy to use, intended for blogging but one could easily use wordpress to share reading course materials with students<\/li>\n<li>Joomla &#8211; open source, harder to use in that you run from your own servers, used for many different types of sites<\/li>\n<li>Youtube &#8211; easy to use, millions of free videos of all kinds, used by everyone on the planet<\/li>\n<li>JStor &#8211; if you&#8217;ve written a research paper, you likely used JStore. Lots of peer-reviewed journal articles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Learning or Course Management Systems &#8211; \u00a0These tools facilitate learning goals by\u00a0organizing content, allowing communication between teacher and students, provide a means for teachers to give and receive assignments.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Blackboard &#8211; proprietary, typically used by larger organizations with large budgets<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.geofboyle.net\/moodle\/\">Moodle<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; open source with many extensions and add-ons<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Technology Standards &#8211; These &#8220;tools&#8221; take care of certain kinds of\u00a0compatibility\u00a0issues involved with plugging modules into an LMS.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"SCORM and the Value of Metadata to\u00a0eLearning\" href=\"http:\/\/geofboyle.wordpress.com\/2012\/02\/16\/scorm-and-the-value-of-metadata-to-elearning\/\">SCORM<\/a><\/li>\n<li>AICC<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Web 2.0 &#8211; These tools can support <a title=\"Student-centered\u00a0Learning\" href=\"http:\/\/nwlink.com\/~donclark\/hrd\/media\/social_learning.html\">social aspects of learning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Facebook<\/li>\n<li>Ning<\/li>\n<li>Yahoo and Google groups<\/li>\n<li>wikis &#8211; set of user-editable pages where a group of learners\/practioners collectively write and edit to develop a body of knowledge into a mature reference work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The following are commonly used eLearning tools.
